Declutter Before Moving
Most people realize they should declutter before moving. Summer is the traditional time when people move from one location to another. Who wants to pay to move things you really don't want to your new home where it's just going to sit in boxes until your next move?
Have you ever noticed how many garage doors are rarely opened in your neighborhood? And how many cars are sitting in the driveways up and down your street?
Organizing Tips for Clutter Control
My husband and I take walks together several nights a week, and on those rare occasions that we see an open garage door, the garage is usually filled with boxes, bins, bikes, sports equipment, tools and all kinds of paraphernalia, much of which is probably not even used.
So if you're planning to move this summer or you want to downsize (or you just want to reclaim your garage!), here are simple tips to organize your home to ensure clutter control and higher productivity…
1. Don't get more overwhelmed.
I realize you may already be feeling overwhelmed by your clutter. Take a deep breath - you don't have to get rid of it all in one day. Just promise yourself that you'll get rid of a little bit of clutter each day and before you know it, you'll be able to see your table tops and your bedroom closet floor, and maybe even get that expensive car in your garage.
If you have a room that's filled to the brim, focus on that one room for the next couple of weeks and get rid of the things that you don't use and/or love.
3. Seriously sort through your things and lighten your load.
And don't buy new stuff until after you've moved. If you declutter before moving, your move will be easier and less stressful.
4. Split up tasks between you and your spouse.
And if you have kids, make sure they have their own chores to do. Many hands make light work!
5. Make a plan.
Make a To Do list each night for the next day. Follow the list closely and cross things off as you finish them. You'll stay on track and have a great sense of accomplishment at the end of each day.
6. Above all, don't give up.
And if you need a little help and encouragement, consider hiring a Professional Organizer to come in and be your “body double.” It’s amazing how much more you can get done when you have someone there who knows how to declutter and can keep you focused on the task at hand.
So declutter before moving – or if you're not planning a move, declutter anyway and enjoy the freedom and peace of mind that all that newfound space will give you!
